Phase II Testing & Phase III Data Recovery
Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas
Archeologists work to uncover findings during Phase III investigations
From 2015 to 2020, aci env consulting conducted Phase II archeological testing, then subsequent Phase III data recovery, and finally full curation of collected artifacts of a known prehistoric-age and NRHP eligible archeological site in Fort Worth, Texas.
The site contained evidence for at least three occupational surfaces, each separated from the others by riverine deposits with the lowest surface just under 4 feet below the ground surface. Findings included intact hearths, large amounts of animal bone and mussel shell, and numerous stone tools. Charcoal samples submitted for radiocarbon analysis yielded dates between 2500 and 1500 BP (before present).
The Phase II and III required extensive consultation with TxDOT archeologists and the Texas Historical Commission (THC) to ensure the project received concurrence and notice to proceed without affecting the client’s schedule. The full curation also required extensive consultation with TxDOT archeologists and the THC, as well as the Texas Archeological Research Laboratory (TARL) of the University of Texas in order to maintain curational standards set by the State of Texas.
